Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is the most prestigious Indian institute for pursuing engineering studies. Lacs of students take part in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and only handful of them are selected for these premier institutes.

In recent years, the number of students reaching the merit threshold has increased significantly. Is this a healthy sign of fair education policy and better education system, or is it something else? Some of the IIT caretakers feels the other way. They are concerned over missing the raw talent of the country behind JEE.

Today, thousands of coaching institutes have popped up in every corner of the country, giving coaching to IIT aspirants and helping them crack the exam with minimum efforts. These students get well equipped by practicing anticipation of paper pattern and solving similar pattern of problems. IIT caretakers are aware and concerned of this fact, and some of them have even suggested to completely change the structure of Joint Entrance Examinations.

Very soon, the proposed Aryabhatt Knowledge University will be setup in Bihar’s capital, Patna. The state legislature has cleared the bill for erecting the university in the states capital.

After being set up the university will act as a regulating body, and will regularize and standardize the education pattern in all affiliated colleges and institutes. The university has been named after the famous astronomer, Aryabhatt.

University aims to promote high tech courses and create a strong technical work force coming from the state. Some of the subjects that will be given emphasis are Information Technology, Nano-technology and Bio-technology.

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has submitted a plan of Rs. 100 billion to University Grants Commission (UGC) to improve its academic standards and over all infrastructure.

AMU is planning to offer 168 new courses apart from creating well equipped laboratories, new libraries, filling up more faculty positions and creating new sections in campus. AMU is one of the leading and prestigious university of North India, with a rich heritage and history. Since the inception of new technology and courses, university has progressed at steady pace and now wants to expand and standardize its academic structure.

The modernization plan was handed over to the UGC team, who recently visited the university campus.

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has many scholarship schemes for meritorious students and students belonging to weaker sections of society.

West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board has declared the results for JECA Exams – 2008. West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board has been conducting the engineering tests since 1962, for admissions in various engineering courses in renowned colleges across the state.

Selection list of candidates for PG Diploma in Software Technology/ Advanced Course in J2EE (SW-100/SW-101) has been declared by DOEACC Center, Calicut branch. The commencement of classes for the course will start from 4th August, 2008.

St. Stephen’s College has approached Delhi high court alleging that Delhi university (DU) is interfering in its internal matter of appointing full time principle for the college.

Earlier, the court has asked St. Stephen’s College to fill the principals post as soon as possible. DU has recently asked St. Stephen’s college to provide the list of potential candidates that have applied for the job, so that they can decide, who has to be selected for the post. St. Stephen’s alleges that this is direct infringement of their fundamental right of appointing their staff on their own. High court has asked for an explanation from DU by Friday.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is soon going to set up special study centers in UP madrassas. One such center has already been set up in a madrassa in Jalaun district of the state, informed an IGNOU official.

A special course, Bachelor of Preparatory Programme (BPP) will be introduced in these study centers. Any student completing this course can directly apply for graduation and can pursue his higher education. This scheme will encourage drop outs from madrassas to continue their studies.

The districts where Muslim population is more than 60% have been chosen by IGNOU to set up such special study centers in local madrassas.

Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIM – L) has invited applications from scholars for admission in the Doctoral Programme (Fellow Programme in Management) – The 10th Batch Commencing in June 2009.

Today India’s economy is booming and we are seen as a strong economic power in the coming years. Despite this fact, some social issues are still of concern and should be given enough importance if we have to sustain ourselves as a strong socio-economic super power. One such issue is ‘Gender Parity In Primary Education’, which needs immediate attention by state and central governments.

Let’s see some figures* related to gender distribution in primary and secondary education in India.

Primary Schools (Class I-V) -> Parity Index: 0.94 -> 94 girls for every 100 boys
Higher Secondary (Class IX-XII) -> Parity Index: 0.80 -> 80 girls for every 100 boys

The above figures gives a clear picture of wide gap between school going girls and boys. The situation is even more worse in selective areas of the country, especially in west,north west and some parts of north India. The drop out rate of girls is most in primary education, as parents prefer to spend more on their son. Early marriage, security issues also play an important role in further aggravating the situation.

The noticeable difference in gender parity index in urban and rural areas clearly indicates that more attention is needed in rural areas, where drop out rate of girls is much higher than urban areas.

Programmes like Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) launched by government in 2004, does help the cause to some extent, but more action is needed to tackle this situation. Some state governements are also offering free bicycles to girls to travel to school, resulting in decreased drop out rate of girls in these areas.

Unless, the whole outlook of society will not change on this issue, it would be very difficult to close the gap of gender parity index.
