World Cancer Day
4th Feb 2010 is celebrated as World Cancer Day. Cancer was derived from the word crab which in Latin means the “unseen hidden underground enemy.” Cancer causes abnormal and uncontrolled multiplication of cells which do not show any pain at its earliest stage. World Health Organisation, WHO, each year on 4th February supports International Union Against Cancer (UICC) to promote ways to ease the global burden of cancer.
According to a survey conducted by WHO, Cancer is the leading cause of death all over the world without intervention. In 2005, 7.6 million people died of cancer. More than 70% of these deaths occurred in low and middle income countries. WHO estimates that 84 million people will die of cancer between 2005 and 2015 without intervention. To prevent such deaths WHO has developed a series of six modules. These modules provide practical advice for Programme Managers and Policy-Makers on how to advocate, plan and implement effective cancer control programmes.
The theme of World Cancer Day for the year 2010 is “Cancer Can Be Prevented Too.” This year the primary focus of WHO is to focus on simple preventive measures to prevent the spread of cancer by propogating the following:
No tobacco use
Healthy diet
Regular exercise
Limited alcohol use
Protection against cancer-causing infections
Today, to commemorate World Cancer Day, the first Cancer Research UK laboratory has been launched in Scotland at Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital.

Kids as usual don’t like medicines and it is a well known fact. So now, the makers of TamiFlu – the medicine endorsed for Swine Flu treatment has been sweetened according to the tastes of the kids. To treat the H1N1 virus, the only known effective medicine is Tamiflu and to administer the drug to the kids is one uphill tasks for parents due to its taste. Modifying the medicine and diluting it with Cherry Syrup and artificial sweeteners is a method that has now been adopted by the West.
But a word of caution though, before you start mixing just any syrup in the medicine. Not just any cherry syrup can be mixed in the medicine. The prescribing information for Tamiflu lists cherry syrup made by Humco Holding Group as one of the approved liquids the mix with the medicine. So while it is safe to use the Tamiflu in its original format, mixing with any other liquid is best taken on the advice of a doctor.
Gandhi Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi popularly known as the Father of the Nation. Born on 2nd October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat, Gandhiji is known for his invaluable contribution towards India’s freedom struggle. His principles of truth, non-violence and honesty are remembered till date. Mahatma Gandhi is best known as the matchless political leader who evolved the new technique of “Satyagraha”. His fight against untouchability and the notions of superiority and inferiority by birth are also fairly well known. For India, his greatest service was, perhaps, the emancipation of Indian women.
Gandhiji was the person behind the Satyagraha Ashram in Ahmedabad and the Sabarmati Ashram, which became a platform for introducing long-needed social reforms such as ‘Harijan’ welfare, small-scale industries and self-reliance and rehabilitation of lepers. His fight to give equal rights to each and every person of the society irrespective of which strata they belonged made him immortal. Gandhiji portrays a multi-faceted moral and spiritual messiah. It is his philosophies and morals of life, which will make keep alive in our minds forever. 2nd Oct is celebrated every year as Gandhi Jayanti Day as a tribute to the FATHER OF THE NATION
According to a new report published, kids can learn maths in a fun way now. A study published in the US in 2008, asked the primary schoolkids to play snakes & ladders on a regular basis. After a few weeks, it was noticed that the kids showed an increased ability in number skills. Following this, a gaming company has launched a series of new games which make the children count, add, subtract in an environment which is stimulating and filled with loads of fun. These games teach maths in a casual manner without laying too much stress on the kid. It has been noticed that the gamers developed skills which were akin to the skills taught in a classroom environment.
Teaching kids the fun way is the new mantra of these new games. Maths is one of the toughest subjects that the kids have to endure and to build an interest of the kid in this subject is akin to completing a herculean task. By the advent of these games which involve the children in a fun and engaging manner, this task has been reduced to a child’s play (in the literal sense).
