09 17th, 2008India and Britain have come together to forge a stronger bond in the field of education, specifically the teaching of English language. The British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, during his two-day visit to India, announced working towards an Education Partnership Agreement.
He promoted the idea of better cooperation among the British and Indian universities. It was decided that the Indian and British vice-chancellors would meet later this year to seek out the best-possible measures to further the cause of learning the English language.
This trip to India was a part of the Prime Minister’s plan to extend the teaching of English to two billion people by 2020. This initiative would include recruiting ‘master trainers’ in India to develop 750,000 English teachers within five years. Gordon Brown further put forth his country’s support for the Indian government’s 11th Five Year Plan that includes setting up new IITs and IIMs to increase the scope for higher education.
