Policy Document for Deemed Universities
July, 2008
After a petition was filed regarding the growing number of deemed
universities and the status being conferred at large, the Union
Government has assured that a policy to regulate the status and provide
for proper guidelines will soon be put in place.
The Additional Solicitor General of India said that the draft guidelines
rested with the government and that it required more time to come to a
decision.
At present, many universities have been set up and are applying for the
status. Some analysts believe that many such varsities do not even meet
the basic infrastructure requirements, but go unnoticed. Also, the
intervention and partnership programmes by foreign universities have
raised concern over awarding the status.
Many private institutions have been able to secure the status of deemed
universities recently. Authorities are worried that commercial interests
for which many institutions are set may try to push forward and get
accredited.
It has been stressed by various agencies that the deemed university
status be awarded to only those institutions, which follow the high
standards set up by the popular universities in the country and education
and professional councils. |
