Students Guide to Oral Tests

Students Guide to oral tests has particularly been written for students appearing in board examinations and preparing for external evaluation.

For evaluation and assessment of the student, educators have devised different tools that do the dissection and analysis of the knowledge and skills acquired by the student. Written examinations have been the most used and to supplement them, external examinations are conducted.

Conducting oral tests is the best approach when the educator wants to determine the real assimilation of the content and subject matter by the student. Oral tests are further conducted to know more about other skills like presentation and ideation.

In Indian context, oral tests are mostly conducted in external examinations to supplement practical tests in Science, Home Science and Crafts.

Oral Tests and Student Skills
Besides the needed awareness and knowledge about the subject matter, many other aspects and student skills are evaluated and the final score is awarded based on all these considerations. Some important skills evaluated during the oral tests include:

• Language: The person who examines carefully observes the language that students use during conversation. The examiner usually puts a question or may ask the student elaborate on some point or topic. Simple language
and lucid words are preferred and merited high.

• Ideation and Organisation: Since the conversation or the questions asked are necessarily not structured, the examiner also sees as how the ideation takes place in student and how the student is going to organize
the idea and present it.

• Grammar and pronunciation: The examiner also evaluates language skills like grammar and pronunciation. Scientific terms, phenomena or processes have to be pronounced in appropriate way.

• Fluency: The examiner also evaluates the fluency with which the student converses. Students who have limited knowledge or ideas about the subject matter tend to repeat things and often take long pauses.

In India, academic results and student evaluations are intertwined with several other elements. The competition, especially in secondary and senior secondary level becomes increasingly fierce. Students vie for score and sometimes even a single point becomes the determining factor.
