Budget For Delhi 2014-2015: What’s for the Education Sector?

The new Government has truly set the budget for the country’s capital keeping in mind the needs of the common man and plans to move in the right direction.

Amongst others, while talking about the education sector, our Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley has truly spruced-up the educational infrastructure by announcing that Rs 2,482 crore have been today allocated to the Education sector in the Delhi budget, which is approximately 14.8 per cent of the plan outlay of Rs 16,700 crore.

Highlights for Education Sector:

  • Rs 350 crore was reserved for the construction of 20 new schools. This action has been taken in lieu of the additional support required in the existing educational infrastructure, wherein the enrolment rate in the Government Schools is increasing at the rate of 1 lakh per year and Delhi needs around 500 new schools, as per RTE norms.
  • Further, to enhance the quality of teaching, focus will be laid on training the teachers in course content, teaching skills and creating better teaching environment in Government schools. For this, training will be imparted to 20,318 teachers through State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).
  • Besides this, a Skill Development Centre is proposed to be set up under PPP mode for which 37 acres of land has been acquired. The centre would train approximately 15,000 students per year based on the needs of the industry.
  • Also, the Government has laid emphasis for promoting languages like Urdu, Punjabi and Sanskrit.
  • Senior secondary schools exclusively for girls would be open to promote education for girls and special emphasis would be given on improving sanitary conditions in Government schools.
  • Further, it is also proposed to set-up a new school of Planning, Architecture and Design at a cost of Rs 285 crore in East Delhi by Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.
  • The Government also said that construction of National Institute of Technology, Delhi at Narela for which 51 acres of land has been procured will be expedited.
