Since the dawn of Indian independence, the government has been trying its best to meet the education requirements of the people and maintain good education standards. With the same intent, the Planning Commission recommended the introduction of Correspondence Education in the third five-year plan, back in 1961. It was adopted in 1962 and since then distance education marked its beginning. Today, distance education has received a nationwide popularity and thousands of students are educated as per this mode.

Distance Education – Explained
Distance education is one of the non-formal modes of education where students and teachers do not have to meet in person every day for learning and teaching purpose. There are two things characteristic about the distance education – the space between the students and teacher and the time of interaction. In distance education these two are taken care by employing modern means of communication technology.

Why is Distance Education Important?
Distance education plays a great role in educating the masses, which for some reason cannot receive the formal education. For instance, children living in distant places from where reaching the education institute is very inconvenient can opt for distance learning. There are few days of regular teacher-students interactions in a month and most of the instructions are given then and there. The same applies in urban areas. A businessman who is busy and his little time to devote in a week to education can opt for distance learning. Therefore, even the employed youth can continue their education in the spare time.

Distance Education Courses
There are a number of open universities and institutes that provide a number of distance learning courses. Full degree and diploma programmes are being provided and in most of the streams as are provided in formal education. One of the best examples is the IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University), which offers an array of distance education courses.
