Indian Certificate of Secondary Education or ICSE is a class X certification completed by qualifying the ICSE exams. ICSE exams are held by an accredited board of examination called CISCE or Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination. ICSE certification is recognised anywhere in India as well internationally.

ICSE Schools
Based on the affiliation of the school with any particular education board, the schools are sometimes referred by the board name. In India popular education boards for school education are the state education boards, CBSE board and CISCE board. Schools affiliated with CBSE are sometimes referred as CBSE schools and same is true for ICSE.

ICSE and Subjects
ICSE has laid down its own rules regarding the conduct of the examination, the syllabus and the subjects offered to the students. In ICSE (grade X), students have to appear in seven subjects, consisting of two groups, the compulsory subjects and the choice subjects.

Compulsory Subjects (Group I):
English (Two papers); History, Civics and Geography (Two Papers); Second Language (Two Papers)

Selective Subjects (Group II): Mathematics (One paper); Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology); Economics (One Paper); Commercial Studies (One Paper); Technical Drawing (One Paper); Modern Foreign Language (One Paper); Classical Language (One Paper); Computer Science (One Paper); Environmental Science (One Paper); Agricultural Science (One Paper). Students are required to select two subjects from this list.

Selective Subject (Group III): Computer Application (One Paper); Economic Applications (One Paper); Commercial Applications (One Paper); Arts (Two Papers); Performing Arts (One Paper); Home Science (One Paper); Cookery (One Paper); Fashion Designing (One Paper); Physical Education (One Paper); Yoga (One Paper); Technical Drawing Applications (One Paper); Environmental Applications (One Paper); Modern Foreign Language. Students are required to select any one of the given subjects.

ICSE Examination and Medium of Learning
There are two distinctions marked in ICSE examinations and schools. First, the medium of learning is English. Second, private candidates are not allowed to sit in the examination. A student who is studying in ICSE affiliated school, only he or she can appear in the examination.

ICSE Popularity
ICSE schools are popular as they have to adopt the policies of the board. The board policies in itself lay foundation of a good school institution. The international acclamation further makes ICSE schools the top brands in India. All these factors are responsible for wide spread popularity of ICSE schools in India.
