National Geographic Launches Magazine For School Children


National Geographic which is famous for its magazines, books and channel, recently launched a special edition of magazines-‘Explorer’ for the school going children with a view to provide educational resources and a new learning solutions for both teachers and students. The US Charge d’Affaires Ambassador Kathleen Stephens inaugurated the National Geographic Learning’s Explorer Education Programme at the American Centre in the presence of the Vice President and Publisher of National Geographic Learning, Francis Downey.

The ‘Explorer’ magazine cannot only engage the students but also teach them in greater depth than which is possible through the textbooks. Mr. Downey also asserted that National Geographic photography and story-telling intends to bring all our sensibilities to education. Adding to this, Downey said that National Geographic Learning is targeting the teachers and students of both the government and private schools in India.

The programme comprises of an accessing content through an interactive application, content on its website, large posters, projectable magazine content, monthly magazines and a teacher’s guide. There shall be four reading levels and seven issues shall be published in a calendar year for each level.  Amongst other countries, India is one of the first one where the National Geographic shall be going to. At present, they have marked their presence in more than a dozen countries including English as well as local languages such as Arabic in Egypt, Portuguese in Brazil, Polish in Poland and they are looking forward to come up with more local languages too.

Talking about our country India, Downey said that they plan to come-up with a Hindi edition of the Explorer and consequently other languages as well. Concluding the same he said that one can walk out to any city, town or village in India and one shall find these young people who haven’t seen the world and through this magazine they will.
