With the mad rush in almost all the Delhi University colleges during the peak admission season the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has been urged to take into consideration a proposal to set up and education hub in Rohini. The DDA officials asserted that the hub will comprise colleges and institutions of higher education. The proposal is being assessed due to the ever-increasing demand for quality educational institutions i.e. both schools and colleges in city.

DDA’s Vice-Chairman, Balvinder Kaur said that they have 66 acres of land in Rohini that shall be looked upon to be developed into an education hub.

There has always been a need for creating more colleges and institutes in the country’s capital and this step will help the students’ organisations to have more options in hand. Another DDA official said that since there exists campuses in North and South Delhi, such campuses should also be set-up in East and West Delhi as well. Hence with the available land in Rohini, the officials are thinking of creating such a campus there.

The DDA is already exploring constructing 15 schools in the vicinity. It has 131 acres in Rohini Sector 40 and 41 which will be utilized for construction of flats while some portion of the land will be earmarked for construction of senior secondary schools.

Giving his inputs on this topic, ABVP state secretary, Saket Bahuguna said that they have maintained that there is a need to set up more colleges as for the last 16 years, no additional colleges have been opened. Adding to this, he said that the DU witnesses high cut-offs due to lack of seats. Thus, they have also suggested that morning colleges should offer programmes in evening shifts too.

NSUI’s spokesperson, Amrishranjan Pandey said that each year, several students who have scored 90% do not get admission in a college of their choice. In their manifesto for the Delhi University Students’ Union polls last year, they had demanded that new colleges be opened. The issue of lack of land for setting up of colleges had also come up. Following this, they had suggested that a huge plot in Dwarka be used to open colleges or set up hostels.
