CAT 2008 Rush

CAT or the Common Admission Test is conducted annually for admission to all the branches of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM). The lucky candidates who get through seek admission in IIM branches located in Ahmedabad, Indore, Bangalore, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Shillong and Lucknow. However, it is just not the IIMs, hundreds of other management institutes depend upon the CAT score for screening admissions in their institute.

This year there has been a buzz about the CAT with the implementation of the proposed OBC quota to take place. Like every year, 2008 too saw the maddening rush for this examination as nearly 2,70,000 aspirants appeared for the examination in 230 centres located in 23 cities. The general view was that the data interpretation (DI) section was perhaps the easiest, while the verbal section though easy, was very lengthy. Most candidates said that the QUANT (quantitative analysis) section was the toughest this year.

Programmes for Government Servants at IIM-A

39 participants have enrolled themselves in an exclusive programme that will be held at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad — IIM-A. The basic ideology is to improve upon the skills needed for formulating better public policies. This postgraduate programme is also called the PGP-PMP and the core of its students are government servants. This initiative is aimed at addressing the need for better public management among the government employees. In fact, there is discussion in the Administrative Reforms Commission of diverting civil services towards the private sector too. This also marks the coming together of the government and corporate sectors.

100% Placement at IIM Kozhikode

IIM (K) has succeeded beyond expectations by getting hundred percent placements for its students in times when the economy is slowing down and fears of recession have seized every professional sector. As a part of its summer placement initiative, the Institute was flooded with lucrative offers from banks and financial institutions including the likes of Citibank, ICICI, Standard Chartered, American Express, JP Morgan and Edelweiss Capital. These placements come as a huge relief as everyone was expecting hiring to nosedive with the bleak international and national economic circumstances. In fact, the number of firms that visited IIM Kozhikode went up to 102 as compared to 66 from last year! Some students even got international offers from global commercial centres like Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai.

IIM Bangalore Awarded the Best B-School in India

The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore — IIM (B) has the honour of being awarded as the best B-School in India. The award was presented at the prestigious Eduniversal World Convention, La Sorbonne, Paris in France. The ceremony took place on November 4, 2008. IIM, Bangalore has been recognized among nine Eduniversal-defined geographical zones. These included Latin America, Northern America, Africa, Middle East, Central Asia, Far Eastern Asia, Oceania, Eastern Europe and Western Europe.

The initial selection was made by the Eduniversal International Scientific Committee. IIM (B) faced close competition from 27 other reputed global business schools. The competition was tough and this can be judged from the fact that IIM (B) was chosen from a total of nearly 1000 business schools, chosen from 153 countries. Eventually, IIM Bangalore was awarded as the Best Business School in Central Asia region. It was closely followed by IIM Ahmedabad.

Students of IIM launch ‘Students’ Portal’

A portal has been launched by three students of the Indian Institute of Management —IIM. The portal would mainly deal with careers related to business consultancy. The just-launched website, www.learn2consult.com, provides all the necessary information for those seeking jobs in consultancy. This innovative portal has been created by the joint efforts of Alok Rustagi — IIM, Kozhikode, Rajat Kashyap — IIM, Lucknow and Karan Ahuja, IIM Lucknow. The portal has linkage to various industry experts. It even has a query-based ‘Ask the expert’ Section. The founding members feel that this portal was vital as consulting was looked down upon in preference for finance-oriented jobs by post-graduate students.
