With the onset of the new academic session, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)-the apex educational institution in India has decided to introduce a new subject in the class XI and XII curriculum viz. Library and Information Science (L.I.Sc.).
To be introduced only in few of the schools, Library and Information Science is an academic elective course (Code No.079). The course that will be considered equivalent to the diploma level course will be introduced as a pilot course, according to the CBSE statement. For the exam, 80 marks have been allotted for theory paper and 20 marks for the practical sessions.
The course intends to impart knowledge on library information society, library resources, reference and information resources, library computer application and library management. The elective can be offered by students as one of the four elective subjects and also as an additional elective subject at senior secondary stage in combination with any of the subjects that are already available in the Scheme of Studies of the Board.
As per the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005, it is essential that future planning treats the library as an integral component of the school at all levels. Both teachers as well the students need to be inspired and trained to use the library as a source for learning, pleasure and concentration.
