Guwahati University Appoints Prof. Medhi As New Vice Chancellor

Guwahati University has appointed the most senior professor of the university Prof. Okhil Kumar Medhi as the new Vice Chancellor of the university. Prof. Mehdi has already been working as Vice Chancellor of the university from June, 2007.

He specializes is chemistry research and has obtained his Post Doctoral degree from university in UK. Previously he has served as head of chemistry department and as dean of faculty of science in the university. The tenure of his job will be accounted from last year since he took charge as VC of the university.

IIT-Kharagpur Announces Nina Saxena Technology Award 2008

Indian Institute of Technoloy (IIT), Kharagpur has announced Nina Saxena Technology Award 2008 for excellence in the field of science and technology. This year the award has been given to 3 scientists from National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur. Following scientists have been awarded this year:

Dr. Subhash P. Andey
Dr. Prakesh S. Kelkar
Dr. Madan V. Nanoti

All 3 scientists are from Geo-Environment Management Division of NEERI. The award was started in memory of alumna Dr. Nina Saxena B.Tech. (Hons.), ECE of 1992 batch.

IIT-Patna Premises Face Waterlogging

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Patna which started its operations on 7th August is facing severe waterlogging in the temporary premises that is allocated till the arrangement of permanent campus. The campus has been facing this problem since last one week and classes are being affected, leaving the study schedule in dismay.

Faculties and students are in distress over the severe waterlogging problem, as entire premises is submerged in the water. Earlier the state chosen this polytechnic as temporary premises for conducting the classes. Government has started the acquisition process of 500 acres of land for the permanent campus of IIT-P. The permanent campus is expected to be completed in 2-3 years.

Sri Lankan Teachers To Get English Classes In Hyderabad

Under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme between India and Sri Lanka, 41 Sri Lankan government school teachers have been selected for scholarship that includes an English training course at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) in Hyderabad.

The 3 months course will be sponsored by Indian government covering all the expenses of the teachers during their training. After going through the training, the teachers will be serving as master trainers in Sri Lankan education sector after their return back to home.

Indian government will also be assisting in establishment of an English language school at Peradeniya in the central Kandy district of Sri Lanka.

NID Invites Applications For PG Course In Photography Design

National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad has invited applications for 1 year full time course in Post Graduate Certificate Course In Photography Design (PGCPD). The course will have 2 semesters of 6 months each and students will have the opportunity to complete the second semester in University College of Creative Arts, Farnham, UK.

Application forms for the course are available from 18th August, 2008, and will be available till 12th September, 2008. Last date for submitting the completed application form is 12th September, 2008. Interviews of shortlisted candidates will be done on 14th October, 2008.

UP Government Plans Regional Cuisine In Mid Day Meals Scheme

State Government of Uttar Pradesh is planning to introduce regional flavours in servings of Mid Days Meals (MDM) in all government schools across the state.

For implementing this, the state will be divided into 4 parts, and the students will be served local dishes of their region. At present “Kichri” and “Tehri” are served under MDM scheme to over 1,50,000 students up to 8th class in the schools. After the launch of this new initiative, delicacies like Bati Chokha, Rajma and Kheer will also be served depending on the region.

The feedback of the students will also be sent to the central government for improvements and refinement in the implementation process of MDM scheme.
